Frank Asche Named IIFET Fellow

IIFET is pleased to announce that Dr. Frank Asche, Professor in the School of Forest, Fisheries and Geomatics Sciences at the University of Florida, has been named Fellow of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade (IIFET). This recognition comes in acknowledgement of Dr. Asche’s exceptional and enduring contributions to economic theory and empirical analysis in the fields of fisheries, aquaculture, and the seafood trade. 

As one of two of IIFET’s newest Fellows, Dr. Asche will give a keynote address at the biennial IIFET 2024 conference in Penang, Malaysia.

Since earning his PhD from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in 1996, Dr. Asche has garnered international acclaim for his groundbreaking research, comprehensive mentorship, and dedicated service to the academic community.

Dr. Asche’s prolific research spans over two decades and encompasses a wide range of topics within aquaculture and fisheries economics as well as the global seafood trade. He has published a remarkable 232 articles in peer-reviewed journals, along with 18 book chapters and several edited volumes, including articles in leading journals in environmental and natural resource economics, agricultural economics, fisheries science, and food science as well as general scientific outlets such as Science. His publications have amassed over 19,000 citations, reflecting the significant impact of his work on the field.

Dr. Asche’s research has explored diverse aspects of the seafood system, from price determination and globalization of seafood markets to the impact of regulations and environmental factors on industry dynamics. Through applications of innovative methodologies and rigorous analyses to many different systems, Dr. Asche has transformed our understanding of global seafood trade patterns, the efficacy of eco-labeling schemes, and the economic incentives driving aquaculture innovation.

Dr. Asche’s influence extends beyond academia, as evidenced by his active engagement with policymakers, industry stakeholders, and international organizations. He has played pivotal roles in policy design both in Norway and on the global stage, contributing valuable insights to the sustainable management of marine resources and the promotion of responsible seafood practices.

In addition to his groundbreaking research, Dr. Asche is celebrated for his exemplary mentorship and teaching. Over the years, he has supervised numerous PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, shaping the next generation of aquaculture and fisheries economists. His commitment to international collaboration and capacity-building has fostered a culture of excellence and innovation in fisheries and aquaculture economics worldwide.

Furthermore, Dr. Asche has provided exceptional service to the academic community on editorial boards, in leadership roles with professional associations, and on advisory committees. Dr. Asche has served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Aquaculture Economics and Management and as Associate Editor of the journal Marine Resource Economics. His leadership roles include presidency of the International Association of Aquaculture Economics and Management (IAAEM) and the North American Association of Fisheries Economists (NAAFE).

As an IIFET Fellow, Dr. Asche joins a prestigious cohort of esteemed economists recognized for their outstanding contributions to the field. His induction serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and ongoing commitment to excellence in fisheries and aquaculture economics.
