Dale Squires Named IIFET Fellow

IIFET is pleased to announce that Dr. Dale Squires, adjunct professor of Economics at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and Senior Scientist with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), has been named Fellow of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade (IIFET). This esteemed honor recognizes the exceptional contributions of Dr. Squires to the academic and policy communities, which have left a lasting impact on the management and conservation of fisheries resources worldwide.

As one of two of IIFET’s newest Fellows, Dr. Squires will give a keynote address at the biennial IIFET 2024 conference in Penang, Malaysia.

Dr. Squires has left an indelible mark on the management and conservation of fisheries, biodiversity, and oceanic resources through his innovative research and dedication to advancing the field of fisheries economics. Dr. Squires has authored an impressive body of work, including 132 refereed journal articles, 12 books, and 55 book chapters, reviews, and monographs. His publications span a wide array of topics in fishery, natural resource, and development economics, demonstrating his profound influence on the discipline.

Among Dr. Squires’ many contributions, his pioneering application of leading-edge econometric analyses to fisheries data stands out. His research has significantly advanced our understanding of fishers’ behavior in response to management interventions and the industrial organization of fisheries. Through his seminal work in production frontier analysis and productivity measurement, Dale has reshaped the landscape of fisheries economics, paving the way for more effective management strategies and sustainable resource use.

Dr. Squires’ impact extends beyond academia to the realm of public policy and governance. As a senior scientist at NMFS, he has played a pivotal role in shaping fishery policy at both regional and international levels. His ability to bring together diverse stakeholders, including industry, conservation groups, and government agencies, has been instrumental in addressing critical issues such as overcapacity in fisheries and the conservation of endangered species.
